HI VISTA AREA, Los Angeles County — For residents looking for an outdoor day trip, nearby Saddleback Butte State Park protects Joshua trees, creosote scrub and other Mojave Desert habitats, with trails ranging from a short interpretive loop to a difficult summit hike.
California State Parks identifies the Dic Dowen Nature Trail as an approximately 0.57-mile accessible loop, with a generally flat route and interpretive information. More challenging routes climb Saddleback Butte from the campground or day-use area, where hikers can see across the Antelope Valley.
Hours, parking and dogs
The park’s posted day-use hours are 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.; the campground is open 24 hours. The posted day-use fee is $6 per vehicle, subject to change. Dogs are permitted on leashes in designated campground, picnic and road areas, but not on hiking trails except qualifying service animals.
The park is located along 170th Street East between Avenues J and K. Visitors should bring water, layers and sun protection and check trail restrictions and current conditions before traveling. Call 661-946-6092 for questions.
